Workshop Creating Music from Hokusai's Paintings at the Sumida Hokusai Museum, Held on September 19

At the Sumida Hokusai Museum, the "Songs Become Pictures, Pictures Become Songs: Hokusai Music Workshop" will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Just as the French composer Debussy drew inspiration from Hokusai's ukiyo-e, Hokusai's works have a charm that makes it feel as though you can hear sounds coming from them. This time, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary special exhibition "Best of the Sumida Hokusai Museum: Scenes on Both Banks of the Sumida River and Masterpieces," participants will use "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Sazai Hall of the Temple of the Five Hundred Arhats" and "Picture of Dancing" as their subjects, searching for the sounds heard in the works and creating music through improvisation. The time is from 13:00 to 15:00 (reception from 12:30), and the venue is MARUGEN100 (lecture room). Anyone may take part; the capacity is 35 people and the participation fee is 1,000 yen. Applications are accepted through the dedicated form until Saturday, September 12. The event is organized by the Opera Hokusai Project and the museum.
