A Music Workshop at The Sumida Hokusai Museum That Creates Sounds from Hokusai's Pictures

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, The Sumida Hokusai Museum will hold “Songs Become Pictures, Pictures Become Songs: Hokusai Music Workshop.” It runs from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (reception opens at 12:30 p.m.), and the venue is MARUGEN100, the museum's lecture room. Just as Debussy drew musical inspiration from Hokusai's ukiyo-e, Hokusai's works have a charm that makes it feel as though you can hear sounds coming from them. This time, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary special exhibition “Best of The Sumida Hokusai Museum: Picture Scroll of Both Banks of the Sumida River and Masterpieces,” participants will take “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Sazai Hall at the Temple of the Five Hundred Rakan” and “Dancing Figures” as their themes, searching for the sounds heard in the works and creating music through improvisation. Open to anyone; capacity 35 people; participation fee 1,000 yen. Applications are accepted through the dedicated form until Saturday, September 12. Organized by the Opera Hokusai Project and the museum.
