Ueno Zoo's Eastern Black Rhino "Argo" Begins Crate Training Ahead of Move to Yokohama

Argo, an Eastern black rhinoceros who has lived at Ueno Zoo for 27 years, is set to move this autumn to Yokohama Municipal Kanazawa Zoo, the place where he was born. The fixing work for the transport crate was completed in late July, and training to get him used to entering the crate began on August 17. At first, he only sniffed at the entrance, but by cleverly placing his droppings and his favorite feed inside, he gradually grew accustomed to it. By September 1, he was able to put even his hind legs into the crate and stay inside for 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Going forward, the goal is to reach the stage where he can stay calm even with a "mansenbo" (a training stick) placed inside, and the training will continue at a pace that doesn't push him too hard.
