Ueno Zoo to Hold Memorial Service for Animals on September 22

Ueno Zoo will hold a "Memorial Service for Animals" on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 (a public holiday) starting at 11:30 AM, in front of the Animal Memorial Monument in the East Garden, to express gratitude to the animals that passed away between September 2025 and August 2026. The event will include flower offerings and a moment of silence led by the zoo director, as well as an introduction of representative animals being memorialized. In addition, from September 19 to October 4, panels introducing 10 representative species, including the ptarmigan and Pallas's cat, will be displayed around the memorial monument. Visitors are welcome to bring their own flowers to offer during the zoo's opening hours. Announced on September 12, 2026.
