Ueno Zoo Reveals the Hidden Ingenuity Behind Animal Exhibit "Signs"

Ueno Zoo has been sharing the thought and effort that go into creating the signs displayed alongside animal exhibits. "Explanatory signs," which convey species names and characteristics, can only serve their purpose if visitors actually notice and read them. That's why zoo staff—including the education and outreach team and animal keepers—work together on things like choosing easy-to-see display locations, keeping the content concise, and creating readable designs using color and illustrations crafted by in-house designers. Updating signs when their information becomes outdated is also said to be an important part of this effort. Next time you visit, why not pay attention to the signs along with the animals? Announced on September 10, 2026.
