Ueno Zoo to Suspend or Change Some Animal Exhibits for Bird Flu Prevention Construction

As a measure against highly pathogenic avian influenza, Ueno Zoo will replace the netting that prevents small animals from entering the Black-headed Ibis House and Crane House in the East Garden, and the former Peccary House in the West Garden. Construction will take place from August 31, 2026 to mid-January 2027 (end date not yet finalized). The Black-necked Cranes and Red-crowned Cranes will be moved to a non-public facility on August 5, and the Red-crowned Cranes can be seen at a facility near Kankantei. The Collared Peccaries will move next to the Pygmy Hippopotamus House on July 26, and the African Sacred Ibis, Bald Ibis, and Red-naped Ibis will move to the Crane House on August 31.
